kranky words

Remember Southpark when Cartman made Scott Tenorman eat chili made from his parents. We laugh at how dark the joke is, particularly the line "...tears of unfathomable sadness...yummy..." The pain of unthinkable loss. Experiences that we'd rather run from and push away to not feel, by any means we can. Although Cartman relished the pain of someone else, the gag highlights that even horrific experiences provide flavor to life. Maybe, rather than push pain away, we can accept it and receive the experience fully. To ignore grief is to miss out on life. We are meant to taste everything we encounter and even the pain can be delicious. It does not drain us. We are filled. Avoidance only deepens the pit we've dug by purposefully rejecting experience. Sadness provides meaning to the joy we experience by mechanism of contrast.
